From the co-founder of OnePlus, Nothing aims to reinvent mobile phone design and inject some fresh excitement into the industry
Have you heard of Nothing? Chances are if you’re a mobile tech fan or work in the telecoms industry, you’ve been watching their journey carefully, ever since founder Carl Pei announced he was creating a new smartphone brand.
Pei was one of the co-founders of OnePlus, the disruptive mobile phone maker that brought with it exciting keynotes and fan-packed events to launch their phones alongside exclusive Fortnite skins, DJs, parties and merch giveaways, attracting millions of fans globally.
OnePlus is a bit more ‘normal’ these days, so Carl Pei created Nothing – a new brand he says will bring excitement back to the mobile phone business. “Today, everyone is so passionless about technology.
“On the consumer hardware side it’s basically more and more of the same, in terms of products,”. Less and less differentiation, and consumers are not as excited anymore. People don’t really want to watch the launch events for new products.”
“It’s very boring today in the industry, and sleepy—and here we are with something new and ready to shake things up,” he says.
Nothing launched a well-reviewed set of earbuds last year as their first product which gave them the confidence that there was an appetite for something fresh and new in the market.
This summer, they’re going big with the launch of their first smartphone – Phone (1).
Those in the industry have been following the LinkedIn hype for months, and on July 12 2022 the phone will be officially unveiled at a London event and live streamed online.
Bold. Warm. Full of soul.
A return to instinct.
This is phone (1).
Tune in on 12 July to hear all about it: https://t.co/FEJL4Jb2Aw pic.twitter.com/5XUbvo8dwZ

During the build up, Nothing haven’t been shy about showing off what the Phone (1) product will look like to try and avoid any inevitable unofficial leaks. Whilst it’s shape is like just about every other smartphone of the moment (although we’d suggest more Apple-looking than Samsung), it features a unique LED lights design on the back of the phone which helps it stand out from the pack – assuming you don’t put a case on it.

No doubt that the unveiling of some of the Phone (1) key features are being saved for the launch event, but there’s no denying it’s creating some excitement amongst tech fans around the world.
In terms of network support, here in the UK, O2 have pledged their support for the device so it will be officially ranged by them. Those choosing to buy the phone SIM free will likely be able to use it on any UK network SIM card, as is the case with most phones nowadays.
We don’t know pricing yet or what date the phone will actually go on sale, but stay tuned as we’ll have all the latest Nothing Phone (1) updates right here on Buzzhut.
